Dave & Carlie Get Married (Aug 2008)

Photography by Jo Sittenfeld.

You'll recall that the weekend started on a Friday night with cocktails at the Coyote Cafe's rooftop bar. Dave was sick with a cold that evening, so he stayed in Albuquerque to rest. Carlie went to Santa Fe to mingle but—to our knowledge—we don't have any photos from that evening because Jo wasn't scheduled to arrive until Friday afternoon.

With all of that out of the way, our weekend coverage actually picks up the next night at the Cowgirl when everyone was feeling a little better.

Donna, Donna's husband Ed, and Andrea. Dave's sister Andrea lived in Berlin (she still does, in fact) and flew in for the wedding.

From Carlie's side: cousin Sybil, Uncle Jim and Aunt Sarah. These days, Sybil looks a little older (she's leaving for college this fall), but Jim and Sarah haven't aged.

The next day was the wedding day. Dave's stylist Jill drove up to Santa Fe to help with the preparations. In order to prevent any pre-wedding nerves, we decided to get ready together instead of remaining separate.

I  specifically remember Jo taking these pictures of the Claritin and Benadryl—she took them to remind us that both Carlie and I were sick with a cold this day. I'm glad she took these because when I revisited these images in 2017, the fact that we were sick on our wedding day was a memory that had started to fade.

To this day, Carlie thinks its funny that it was Dave's stylist who was on scene. (Update: Not much has changed since then.)

The two nuclear families—we couldn't have asked for a better group of people.

Robert and Bethany served as our officiants. If I remember correctly, we ordained Robert over the Internet on a weekend afternoon, while he was passed out on the couch from two Sadies margaritas.

It was really important to me that we get this group shot—thanks for sticking with us and making this happen. I'm so happy to have this, eight years later.

And then there were these two...

When we started the planning process, someone gave us some great advice: "At the reception, you have two options to make the evening memorable—food or entertainment...

... Pick one, pour all your money into it, and you can skimp on the other. But don't try to split the difference between the two. No one will remember either."

We chose the band.

It was money well spent.
